In 2017 the Arnuero Town Hall launched a project to strengthen our traditions and collective memory, through the publication of books that would capture the visual history of our towns through photographs provided by residents.
The first book to be edited was “Isla y Soano, its traditions and its people”, which was released at the end of 2018. In these days, the second volume “Arnuero, its traditions and its people” will go to press and, finally, in 2022 the volume corresponding to Castillo will be completed with which we will put together a faithful portrayal of the customs and traditions of this municipality throughout the 20th century.
Since we set in motion the Ecoparque de Trasmiera project, the Town Hall has not stopped carrying out an essential task for the development of our community: the recovery of our traditions and our collective memory. Recognising ourselves in the past in order to move decisively towards the future is the best way not to lose our way and to keep the roots of our shared history as members of a community.
It is worth remembering that the image illustrating the cover of the Arnuero and its people book that is now being published depicts the traditional festival of the ascent of the Cruz del Cincho in 1950, a tradition that was repeated every 50 years and that in the year 2000 was close to being lost. This was the first action of the Ecoparque de Trasmiera: the recovery of the ascent path to the Cincho and the celebration of the Cruz tradition in the year 2000. It may not have been the most complex initiative or the one with the biggest budget, but without doubt it was an act full of symbolism for what it meant as the opening of a new period in which the preservation of our collective memory and our tradition would move to the forefront of municipal activity.
This book that we are now publishing in collaboration with the Arnuero Local Board and thanks to the donation of photographs by many residents is designed as yet another element to help conserve our graphic heritage and the experiences and memories of our neighbours. For our elders, who will have lived through many of the moments shown, it will undoubtedly bring back unforgettable memories and will provide an opportunity to pass on to the younger generations the values and traditions of generations who, at times, had a difficult life and required a great deal of effort to bring their families through. It will serve to strengthen the ties with those who came before us and passed on the identity that, today, makes proud residents of Arnuero.
