The “LIBERA” project, united against “litterbugness”, was born in 2017 to put a stop to the consequences of dumped rubbish in natural spaces and in Spain’s different ecosystems. It was created by SEO/BirdLife, the leading environmental NGO in Spain, in partnership with Ecoembes, the non-profit environmental organisation that promotes the circular economy through recycling packaging.
The aim of this initiative is to raise awareness and mobilise citizens to keep natural spaces free of rubbish so that, in this way, we can “free” much more life in favour of biodiversity. To do so, from LIBERA we take an integrated approach to the problem, across three areas of action: knowledge, prevention and participation.
The Town Hall of Arnuero, through its Ecoparque de Trasmiera, has created an event within the programme “1 m2 for nature” that is currently under way: the campaign for rivers, reservoirs and lakes. Within this course of action, the ecopark has called an event to free the Ría de Castellano of litter, a natural area of particular environmental and tourism value, which forms part of the LIC Ría de Ajo and the ZEPA zones. The event has been scheduled for 14 March at 10:30. For Covid reasons, the event is closed on the platform, as it is necessary to keep control over participants and to organise them into small groups in line with the safety protocols that at the time are in force. The “1m2” campaign is a concept that accompanies LIBERA as an engine for citizen collaboration to clean our shared home, nature. It reflects the fact that, by joining forces, we can achieve many clean square metres and have a major impact on our natural surroundings. And when it comes to the Ecoparque de Trasmiera, it connects perfectly with the drive to raise citizens’ awareness, and with society’s involvement in a task that is commonly carried out with the only effort of the administrations.
