Church of Santa María de Soano

The Church of Santa María is a single-nave building of modest size, with a vestry, a porch and a main entrance on the southern wall. The porch houses the church’s entrance portal, formed by a semicircular arch. The chancel has corner buttresses and the tower stands at the west end. The chancel and the nave are separated by a pointed chancel arch carried on Gothic pillars, which are covered with star-rib vaults with five keystones. It has a high choir at the west end.

The present church is built on an earlier Romanesque church from the late Gothic period. Of the medieval Romanesque fabric, only the corbels survive today, supporting the roof.

Inside, it houses a small but beautiful altarpiece dedicated to Santa María. Likewise, the church has a lovely medieval image of Santa María and the Child Jesus.

It was declared a Local Asset of Cultural Interest in 2014.
