The Town Hall of Arnuero has taken part in the “Blue Trails” call by submitting two routes: the Acantilados de Cabo Quejo trail, which has been part of the programme for years, and, as a new addition, the interactive trail through the Marisma de Joyel, which has received the award for the first time. In this way, the municipality of Arnuero has two of the three Blue Trails recognised in Cantabria, to which the two Blue Centres will also be added: the Molino de Santa Olaja and the Casa de las Mareas, as well as the beaches of La Arena and El Sable, which are once again applying for the Blue Flag. With this, the municipality of Arnuero presents itself as one of the municipalities most committed to the ADEAC programme, which works for responsible, informed tourism aligned with the objectives for Sustainable Development and today’s climate challenges.
The new bid submitted by the Town Hall of Arnuero, and approved by ADEAC, concerns the trail in the Marisma de Joyel that runs between two ADEAC Blue Centres: the Molino de Santa Olaja and the Casa de Mareas, and which features a self-guided information itinerary, with guided visits by staff from the Trasmiera Eco-Park. It will soon be implemented through the development of a digital treasure hunt (gymkhana) that will allow visitors to learn about the value of this wetland while taking part in a fun game.
The World Tourism Organization has reported in its latest Barometer that this activity experienced a sharp upturn in 2022—a recovery that we can turn into a new opportunity to keep making progress towards the goals of a sustainable tourism destination.
The Blue Trails programme continues to grow in its aims and scope. ADEAC continues to reinforce and expand the set of criteria that form the core of this programme. In 2023, we will continue working to adapt and expand the number of municipal trails to the network of Blue Trails and the objectives defined by the National Strategy for Green Infrastructure and for Connectivity and Ecological Restoration.
