On 23 July, the Arnuero Town Hall received a request from the President of the International Committee of the World Biological Corridor, Mr Jorge Extramiana, so that the Corporation would consider the possibility of joining the aforementioned corridor, given that in his opinion the municipality is an important location for the corridor due to its high ecological and strategic value within the route that will link the Peninsulas from west to east and with the corridor towards Northern Europe.
By the Mayor, José Manuel Igual, the local Government’s interest in accepting the proposal and joining the corridor was confirmed, given the importance of the municipality’s involvement in an international project whose objective is the defence, study and research of the environment, biodiversity, nature and the oceans, as well as broadening knowledge about climate change and the species of fauna and flora, in collaboration with the many universities that have joined the World Biological Corridor.
The World Biological Corridor project is present in all five continents, and in its International Committee, personalities and national and international institutions from all of them work and collaborate. It is an international project intended to create a continuous area like an ecological belt around the planet, with green and blue infrastructure, which will link countries, people, plants and animals, jungles, forests and nature reserves, ensuring the survival of species and of global biodiversity. To that end, the International Committee will seek to obtain funding for the development of the many projects proposed in order to implement the corridor’s objectives.
At the plenary session held on 20 September, it was unanimously agreed to ratify the accession to the Biological Corridor and the inclusion of Arnuero as a full member of the International Committee, which will carry out the project’s management.
